Legacy of Caring

Masks for Greater Dover Boys & Girls Club

Many thanks to Amelia Lewis, Customer & Project Coordinator, for her creativity, talent and hard work! In her personal time, Amelia has made approximately 400 masks to share with family, friends, colleagues and others.  On behalf of Chesapeake Utilities, Autumn Chalabala, Director, Business Operations, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Dover Boys & Girls Club in Dover, DE, donated many masks to the organization.

Like so many of us trying to cope with this pandemic, I felt helpless. I just wanted to do something to help and making masks was something that I could do. In addition to helping others, I felt like I received the best gift of all. My mother was a Home Economics teacher and taught me to sew starting when I was 7 years old. She died when I was 14 from colon cancer. As I sat at the machine sewing mask after mask, I felt so close to her, remembering the lessons she taught. In a way, making the masks has given me an opportunity to visit with my mom. To date, I have made over 400 masks and have given them all away. I gave some to the Chesapeake staff, to the teachers at my grandchildren’s school and my grandson’s day care, to folks at my church, to airmen and airwomen and their spouses at the Dover Air Force Base, to the Boys and Girls Club here in Dover, to dialysis clinics in South Carolina, and just recently I gave 35 masks to the staff at the Milford Hospital Day Surgery. I feel like in this era of social distancing, each mask that I give away is a hug. Don’t we all need hugs?”

“Amelia is a true giver, always finding a way to help with her creative mind and abundance of skills.  I know she loves kids as much as I do, so when I saw her making masks, I was hopeful she’d bless us with some.  Her selflessness showed our kids and their families that we will get through this together and someone has their back.”
